I Made You a Mixtape

I know that mixtapes in the traditional sense have gone out of fashion (unless you’re a super-hipster like my friend, Ronnie, who listens to cassette tapes). But the idea of a mixtape lives on in playlists. That’s what I’ve made for you, as a reader of my book, I’m a Christian—Now What? A Guide to Your New Life with Christ.

A cassette tape like the ones used in the 1980s and 1990s to make a mixtape. Now we use playlists.

The Music Behind the Titles

As a storyteller, music fan, and all-around nerd, I love easter eggs and cool music. And if you read the appendix, you’ll know that every chapter of I’m a Christian—Now What? is named after a different pop, new wave, or alt-rock song from the 1970s through the 2010s.

These are not “Christian” songs, by any stretch of the imagination. But they are really great songs that speak to the cultural ideas we all soak in every day, and in many cases to a larger truth represented in the book (usually despite themselves). As I wrote the book, I built the playlist for myself. I moved songs around. I cut some and replaced them with others. And in the end, I had an outstanding and eclectic mixtape that I am thrilled to share with you.

Enjoy!
